EKU AmeriCorps is recruiting AmeriCorps Members for the 2009-2010 program year which is September 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 to serve in elementary schools in Southeastern and Central Kentucky.
The AmeriCorps program is the Peace Corps at home! It is a great way to give back to your community and build your resume! SERV Corps Members serve full time for 1700 hours from September 1, 2009, to June 30, 2010.
To serve as an AmeriCorps Member you must be 18 years of age and a US Citizen. You must also have a high school diploma or a G.E.D equivalent.
SERV Corps AmeriCorps Members are trained by SERV Corps to tutor at-risk reading students, to teach students the Too Good for Drugs drug education program, to coordinate UNITE or ASAP drug education clubs, to recruit volunteers and to coordinate service learning projects for their assigned schools.
SERV Corps AmeriCorps Members who serve 1700 hours in their assigned school from September 1st to June 30th. The SERV Corps Member receives:
- a living stipend of $11,400
- free health care insurance
- an AmeriCorps Education Award of $4,725 upon their completion of 1700 hours of service
- three hours of undergraduate or graduate credit from EKU upon completion of their 1700 hours of service (the credit is transferable).
- extensive training in tutoring research based reading programs and the 5 key components of reading
- extensive training in teaching drug education curricula
- extensive training in establishing and coordinating drug education clubs
- extensive training in a variety of specialized topics
