Admission for Student Teaching

1. Senior standing (90 hours or more). 
2. Admission to the Teacher Education Program at Eastern at least one term prior to the semester when they apply to student teach. 
3. Apply for student teaching the term prior to the desired term to teach. 
4. Valid medical examination and current TB test. 
5. Have a completed planned curriculum (contract). 
6. Complete Ethics Declaration. 
7. Complete a minimum of twelve (12) hours residency at Eastern. 
8. Complete all necessary prerequisites for teaching area. 
9. Complete all prerequisites for professional education. 
10. Recommended by student's advisor and departmental chair. 
11. Student must attain a minimum of 2.50 GPA (4.0 Scale) in: 
      a.  Overall undergraduate course work 
      b.  Professional education course work 
      c.  EKU course work 
      d.  Teaching major(s), minor(s), area(s) of academic emphasis, and certification endorsements. 

Students are not allowed to take any other courses (including correspondence and transient courses) while student teaching.  Credit for unfinished correspondence courses will not be allowed during the student teaching semester. 

Students of senior standing (90 hours or more with a minimum of 12 semester hours residence at Eastern) may enroll in student teaching if they have satisfied the following requirements: 

Application for student teaching

1. Applicants  must be admitted to the teacher education program prior to the application semester. 
2. Applicants must file an application during the first four weeks of the semester prior to the term in which student teaching is desired. 
3. Applications filed will be evaluated and processed for approval or disapproval.

Evaluation of application will include in part:

1. The planned curriculum.  Each applicant must have an approved planned curriculum on file with the Dean of the College of Education. 
2. All prerequisites in professional education and pre-student teaching curricula in the applicant's area as prescribed by this Catalog.  These must be completed prior to student teaching. 
3. Recommendation made by the applicant's advisor and approval by the department chair. 
4. A valid medical examination report, including current tuberculosis test report. Students with any significant deviation from normal physical and psychological well-being will be referred to a proper examining physician. 
5. The ethics declaration.  Each applicant must complete and sign a new "Personal and Professional Fitness Declaration" form. 
6. Behavior that relates to the moral, ethical, social, and personal standards of professional competency. The applicant's comportment will be subject to review and appraisal by the department responsible for the student teaching recommendation and the College of Education. 
7. Academic Requirements: Undergraduate degree students' GPAs are based on the hours attempted as shown on the official Eastern transcript. Post-degree certification students' GPAs are based on all undergraduate course work and on the hours attempted, as shown on the official Eastern transcript. 

Elementary Education (P-5) and Middle Grade Education (5-9) Majors 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in all undergraduate course work. 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in college work at EKU. 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA with a grade of "C" or higher in courses in the "core and supporting course    requirements,"* area(s) of academic emphasis, "teacher education requirements" (see program display for a list of courses), teaching minor(s), and certification endorsement(s). 
  -Other requirements as found in the appropriate department presentation. 

* supporting course requirements for elementary education only. 

Special Education 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in all undergraduate course work. 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in college work at EKU. 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA with a grade of "C" or higher in courses in the "major, core, and option*", "elementary/middle grade and supporting course requirements", area of academic emphasis**, teacher education requirements (see program display for a list of courses), teaching minor(s), and certification endorsement(s). 
  -Other requirements as found in the appropriate department presentation. 

*combination of major, core, and/or option as identified in the program display. 
**emphasis with middle grade education only. 

Communication disorders majors should see their advisor for information related to admission to student teaching. 

Secondary Education Majors 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in all undergraduate course work. 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in college work at EKU. 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA in teaching major(s), minor(s), area(s) of academic emphasis, and certification endorsement(s). 
  -Minimum 2.5 GPA with a grade of "C" or higher in courses in "teacher education requirements" (see program display for a list of courses). 
  -Other requirements as found in the appropriate department presentation.

 Requirements for Student Teaching


General Education --- The major portion of the student's first two years at Eastern Kentucky University is devoted to general education. These courses provide an integrated curriculum which covers broad areas of knowledge, encompassing all the important fields needed by educated persons. 


Teacher Education Program --- Students will apply for admission to Teacher Education in the Office of Student Services (Combs Building, Room 423). Formal applications will be accepted based upon completion of the following requirements:

1. Must complete 60 hours of credit (excluding 090 courses). Transfer students must complete 12 hours of credit at Eastern. 

2. Students must have a American College Testing (ACT) score on file at the university Office of Admissions. See EKU Catalog for required test scores.

3. Students whose ACT scores fall below the minimum may not enroll in EDF 103.

4. Attain a minimum overall grade point average of 2.50 (4.0 scale) in all undergraduate course work; a minimum grade point average of 2.50 in college work at Eastern; a grade of "C" or higher in EDF 103 (including satisfactory speech and hearing screening), EDF 203, ENG 101 and ENG 102.

5. Completion of a college level mathematics course, MAT 105 or above (exclusive of MAT 201 and 202), with a grade of "C" or higher.

6. Completion of CSC 104 or CIS 212 with a grade of "C" or higher. See EKU Catalog for further elaboration on computer literacy requirement.

7. Satisfactory performance on the University Writing Requirement (UWR) is required of all students seeking initial certification.

9. Student must complete and sign a "Personal and Professional Fitness Declaration" form.

10. Present four satisfactory recommendations from Eastern faculty members including the EDF 103 instructor, EDF 203 instructor and the advisor or a faculty member in the major.

11. Must complete the formal interview process. NOTE: Students will present their portfolio for review and approval as one of the components of the interview process.

12. Students must have no physical or psychological impairments that would preclude teaching success. Students must also demonstrate acceptable social behavior at the University and in the community-at-large.

13. After admission to the Teacher Education Program, if a student is placed on either academic or social probation, the admission may be reevaluated.

The Student Teacher --- A student of senior standing (90 hours or more) may enroll in student teaching if they have satisfied the following requirements:

b. Behavior that relates to the moral, social, ethical and personal standards of professional competency. The student's comportment will be subject to review and appraisal by the department responsible for the student teaching recommendation and the College of Education.

c. Have a completed curriculum contract on file with the Dean, College of Education.

3. Completed a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours of on-campus residence at Eastern prior to admission to student teaching.

4. Completed all prerequisites in professional education and pre-student teaching curricula in the applicant's area as prescribed by the University Catalog EKU Undergraduate Catalog. These must be completed prior to student teaching.

5. Recommended by the student's advisor and approved by the department chair.

6. Students are not allowed to take any other courses (including correspondence and transient courses) while student teaching.

7. Each applicant must complete and sign a new "Personal and Professional Fitness Declaration" form.

8. A grade of "C" or above in professional education courses including EDF 103, 203, 310, EPY 319, 413, SED 401 and ESE 498.
