Student Teaching Requirements
Elementary/Middle Grade/Special Education
Listed below are the minimal requirements for student
teachers:
- Assume duties of the teacher as opportunities become
available in consultation with the cooperating teacher.
- Teach lessons/units and develop written lesson plans,
following a prescribed format (i.e., KTIP).
- Collect samples of work in a “working portfolio” that
include lessons taught, assessments, student activities, communication to
parents, and other material suitable for inclusion in the final portfolio.
- Plan a “solo week” toward the end of the student
teaching experience for each placement and communicate to the university
supervisor.
- Facilitate the reporting of progress from the
cooperating teacher to the university supervisor via weekly plans and
evaluations.
- Keep a journal of daily activity that reflects on
practice and analyzes teaching practices that lead to increased student
achievement.
- Develop a growth plan with input from the university
supervisor and cooperating teacher that will guide practice using formats
provided in the Elementary/Middle Grade/Special Education packet housed online
at the Professional Laboratory Experiences web site (i.e., KTIP format).
- Act upon suggestions for improvement provided by the
cooperating teacher and the university supervisor.
- Attend scheduled seminars and complete assigned tasks
emanating from the seminars.
- Video tape a lesson taught in each student teaching
assignment and analyze it using the “Drake” self-evaluation provided in the
“packet” online.
- Complete a “solo week” in which the student teacher
assumes either the entire schedule or a major portion of the teacher’s
schedule for one week.
- Complete the portfolio, with at least two items housed
in each of the Kentucky New teacher Standards. The portfolio may include
items from pre-student teaching experiences, but should reflect significant
experiences from student teaching.
- If you should acquire any criminal charges during your
student teaching you are required to submit a new Professional Fitness
Declaration to the office of Professional Laboratory Experiences in Combs 425.
