Alternative Routes to Certification -
Master of Arts in Education LBD Option

Thank you for the interest you have shown in the Master of Arts in Education: Special Education - Learning and Behavioral Disorders Alternative Certification Option.
In order for you to prepare for admission into the program the following criteria must be met:

Application deadline March 15 for summer admission

  • Completed bachelor's degree in any area
  • 3.0 GPA overall OR  for your last 60 credit hours
  • Completion of the Graduate Records Exam (GRE)
    • Scores prior to October 1, 2002
      A combined score of 1000 on the three general sub-tests of the GRE or a 2.75 GPA plus a GRE score when multiplied together that equals a total of 3300 or above
    • Scores after October 1, 2002  
      Minimum Scores
                 Verbal            450
                 Quantitative   350
                     or 
                  Total              800
  • The Miller's Analogies Test (MAT) may be substituted for the GRE
    Minimum score of 389.
  • An interview will be scheduled with the MAEd committee (we will call to schedule this after all materials have been submitted).
     
  • Official copies of all college transcripts.  Transcripts must come DIRECTLY from the registrar's office to the Eastern Kentucky University Graduate School Office to be official.
  • Filing of application with the Graduate School
  • Three letters of recommendation sent directly to the Graduate School

The department will be accepting up to 25 candidates for summer admission into this program.  In addition to the above admissions requirements for the Graduate School, MAEd. candidates must also meet the following department and College of Education Requirements:

    • Completing a 200 to 250 word philosophy of education statement on why you want to teach students with special need
    • Complete the following two disposition assignments
    • Personal and Professional Fitness Declaration
    • Review by the College of Education Alternative Certification Committee (AFTER completion of 12 credit hours of coursework)

Participation in the Alternative Routes to Certification Program through Eastern Kentucky University's College of Education, affords candidates the opportunity for but does not guarantee a certification recommendation or that the Master's Degree will be awarded; does not guarantee certification by Kentucky Department of Education; and does not guarantee initial or continuing employment by a school district.

    Once you have completed the requirements for the Graduate School your file will be sent to the Department of Special Education.  If you meet the minimum requirements for the MAEd.
