Secondary Education -  Master of Arts in Education


This curriculum is designed to help 5-12, 8-12, and P-12 teachers achieve goals and develop advanced competencies in professional education, academic areas, and interpersonal relationships.  For clear admission to any of the secondary M.A.Ed. options, students must  meet the general requirements of the Graduate School and provide evidence of achieving one of the following test scores:  (1)  A minimum total GRE score of 700 with minimum verbal and quantitative subtest scores of 300. (Currently,  the writing subtest is required but a cut-off score has not been established.)  (2) A score of 388 on the Miller's Analogies Test, or (3) A satisfactory score on the PRAXIS II (Student inquiries regarding PRAXIS scores for graduate admission should send an email to coeadvising@eku.edu ).

Art Option ( P-12)  12 hours

Biology Option ( 8-12 )    12 hours

English Option ( 8-12 )    12 hours 
At least one course from each of the following areas: AREA I (ENG 730, 731, 735, 740, 745, 750, 770, 833, 850, 853, 854, 870, 873, 874, 876, 878, 880 ) AREA II (ENG 702, 710, 715, 720, 725, 800, 804, 807, 808, 809, 810, 825).  Students may take ENG 806 Writing Project and use three hours in AREA II but the remaining three hours can be used as an elective only. 

Family and Consumer Sciences Option ( 5-12 )   12 hours 
Select courses from the following list which emphasize area of certification.

Mathematics Option ( 8-12 )     12 hours 
Depending upon background, students may select one of the following:
  
Mathematics Specialization:
  Select courses from at least three of the following groups including at least one 800 level   course.  Other courses may be selected with advisor approval.  Group A (MAT 706, 806, 809, 810, 870); Group B (MAT 740, 750, 815, 850, 856, 870); Group C (MAT 705, 735, 755, 760, 870, 871); Group D (CSC 730, 745, 746, 812, 831); Group E (STA 700, 701, 720, 721) 
Mathematics and Computer Science Specialization:  CSC 812, CSC 831, Two courses selected from the following: CSC 745, CSC 746, CSC 833, CSC 834, CSC 842, CSC 880.  Electives: Selected from CSC or other options with advisor approval. Students lacking background to take the Subject Matter (Specialization) courses must take CSC 730 and CSC 801.  They may wish to select one of these as their elective.  Students with background equivalent to six hours of high level programming language such as Pascal may waive CSC 730.  CSC 801 will be waived for students with mathematical background needed for CSC 831.

Music Option ( P-12 )    12 hours 
To be selected from the following: MUS 713, 751, 754, 755, 756, 764, 765, 784,  789, 845, 846, 847, 850, 872, 880, 883, 885.
At least one three hour course at the 800 level must be selected.

Physical Education Option ( P-12 )    12 hours 
Select two courses from one category and one course from each of the remaining categories.  Category I: PHE 820, 835, 851, 869 or 875; Category II: PHE 822, 848, 891; Category III:  PHE 821, 831, 833, 852, 895.  

Physical Science Option ( 8-12 )     12 hours
Students will select 12 hours from one of the following physical science options:
