Secondary Educational Counselors

Secondary Teaching Majors should contact their education counselor during the semester in which they are enrolled in EDF 203 or 310.  You should plan to complete your Admission to Teacher Education Interview during the semester that you enroll in EDF 319.  Admission to the program is required before you can register for EDF 413, SED 401, or your particular content methods course(s).

The Teacher Education Checklist provides a list of the steps required prior to student teaching.

All Secondary Teaching Majors must complete 30 hours of independent field experiences.  These should include observations at multiple school sites and multiple classrooms.  Your education counselor will explain the specific requirements of your field of study.  Forms for documentation of these experiences are available in Combs 112.

Art Education Majors are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their Education Counselor as soon as the major has been declared to discuss options and opportunities for completion of the required 30 hours of field hours. It is the student's responsibility to make this contact, using the information provided below. With the demands of required hours in other classes, it is recommended that students begin working on the 30 required individually planned hours as soon as possible, preferably by the completion of EDF 203.

Each secondary education student is responsible for individually completing 30/35 hours of field/clinical hours.  These 30/35  hours contribute to your total of 150 field/clinical hours.  The primary purpose of these field/clinical hours is to permit you to experience real world classrooms and real world secondary students.  It is important to have a variety of experiences.  In particular, you should gain insight into the typical high school science or math curriculum, high school teaching techniques, classroom management techniques, and characteristics of adolescents.  These guidelines should be used in completing the 30/35 hours.
