Modifying web content on http://studentweb.eku.edu using FTP
 
What you will need:
Your username:
Your username is located on the card you got back after signing up for your new account.
It is typically Firstname_Lastname. You can call the IT Helpdesk at x3000 to find out your username information.
Your Password:
Refer to http://studentdocs.eku.edu/email/password.php for questions about your password.

Introduction:
The following is instructions for modifying your webpages via FTP. You will be walked through using My Computer to connect to and download from the new Student Web Server. The process is not complex, and can be performed from any computer on or off campus.
Your default page should be named: default.htm or index.htm

Basic Instructions:
  • Login to your account
  • Copy the file(s) down you want to edit
  • Make the changes
  • Upload the file(s)
  • Logout of your account

  • Logging into your account: 

    You can also work on your eportfolio from computers off campus.  Any computer that has internet access and Microsoft FrontPage or Microsoft Word installed should work.  This depends, of course, on which application your eportfolio was created with. The newer Home (default.htm) page used to link to Tasksteam should be edited with MS Word only. Opening your web with the incorrect program may destroy its navigational structure.  Contact us at the Technology Office if you are unsure. To log into your account:

    1. You will need to connect to the internet and open My Computer
    2. Type the following in the address blank: ftp://USERNAME@ftp.studentweb.eku.edu Substitute your own username in place of “USERNAME”.
    3. Click OK.
    4. You will be prompted to give your password.  Type it in and click OK.

    1. You are now logged in and should see the contents of your account.

    Copying Files to Your Home Computer

    You are strongly urged to copy the entire contents of your eportfolio to your computer for editing.  Copying only some of the files may destroy your eportfolio’s navigational structure.  Make sure you copy all files including hidden ones by clicking tools, folder options, and selecting “show hidden files and folders”.  Files can be copied from your account to your computer in the following way:

    • Drag the eportfolio folder you see in your account to the desktop. If inside your eportfolio folder there resides another eportfolio folder, then you may have made a mistake at some point in the past. You should only have one eportfolio folder inside your W: drive.
     

    Making changes to the document:
    You need to use the editing software discussed above to modify your pages. Open the editor and open the page you would like to work on. Make any changes you wish, and save the document.


    Copying Files from your Computer:
    Files can be copied from your computer to your account in the following way:

    • Drag or Copy the eportfolio folder back to the My Computer window being careful not to place it inside the original eportfolio folder. You should receive a popup window asking about replacing or overwriting files with the same file name.

    Logging out of your account:
    Before logging off you should open an internet browser and access your website to verify the changes you made are correct. You should close My Computer to logout of your account.
