The Future Teacher Corps program
enables undergraduate Education majors to work with peers, high school
& middle school students, and the College of Education to recruit,
retain and reconnect students. One
of their many responsibilities include recruiting future educators to
Eastern Kentucky University. They
travel with the Recruitment & Retention Specialist to community
colleges, high schools, and college fairs to speak about the education
programs at EKU. They serve
as student guides at the College of Education’s on-campus visitation
program, Future Teacher Day. They
are present at College of Education functions as ambassadors and guest
speakers. In addition, they
work on special in-house projects such as telemarketing and letter
writing. Another responsibility of a
Future Teacher Corps member is to help increase the retention rate of
Education majors. Projects
include advising, mentoring, and tutoring students in the EDF 103 and EDF
203 courses. The goal is for all students to meet all state and university
requirements for admission to teacher education and progress through
admission to student teaching. Last but not least, the most
rewarding and unprecedented responsibility of a FTC member is to reconnect
with regional school districts to help establish and maintain Future
Educators of America organizations in the high (and middle) schools.
They provide assistance to advisors of existing or emerging
organizations. They also help
plan and facilitate conferences on EKU’s campus for regional FEA
chapters and advisors. Members
make the selection of school and frequently choose one in their hometown. Future Teacher Corps members work 40 hours each semester at a pay rate of $8.00/hour. Students enjoy the flexibility of choosing which hours/functions they work so other extracurricular activities are not eliminated. These students are interviewed and selected by the Recruitment and Retention Specialist each semester and are considered some of the best and brightest in the College of Education. |
